NVIDIA has introduced a new version of graphics linux nvidia driver 390. The release of driver NVIDIA 390 is making some interesting changes and additions.
Note. Before downloading and installing new driver, make sure that your system has a supported NVIDIAGPU. You can also use automatic scanning, contacting the Drivers section on the website of NVIDIA to find the latest drivers for your NVIDIA GPU.
How to identify and install the correct driver for your Nvidia video card in Linux Mint can be viewed on page "How to detect and install the correct version of the Nvidia driver on Linux Mint". Otherwise, after you install the NVIDIA driver 390 you risk not to run the system.
Installation latest version into Linux Mint:
If you not previously added repository to the system
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt update
After, you can set in the linux mint nvidia drivers Manager
or in the terminal
sudo apt install nvidia-390 nvidia-settings
After the installation, restart the computer to activate this driver.
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
If you installed a new kernel, it is possible to even reconfigure the kernel module with the new driver. To do this, run the following command in the terminal:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-390
In the case when in the terminal you will see the impossibility of reconfiguring the kernel module with the new driver, it is better to stop using it, otherwise you may get black screen after restarting the computer, i.e. the system will be inoperable.
How to get out of the situation "black screen", see "black boot screen after installing video driver".
May the Force be with you,
Good Luck!!!
